Circular economy in Almere

Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands with 215,000 inhabitants, and is located close to Amsterdam. Almere is surrounded by water and has a lot of green areas within the city limits. In Almere, biowaste has always been collected separately and composted. This system allows residents to collect the produced compost for their own gardens. A few years ago Almere started processing other biomass waste streams from the city in the best possible, most circular way. The first residual flow was aquatic plants. These plants are a kind of weed and are mowed every year and then were thrown away. Due to a public-private partnership with several companies, Almere have found great opportunities for the use of these aquatic plants; for example, paper and composite are now made from them, and they are also being processed into concrete. The latest innovation is traffic signs made from giant hogweed. Almere still struggle to scale up pilot projects. Often the projects are small, but precisely this increase in scale is what is needed to make a feasible business case.

Circulaire economie in Almere

Almere is de nieuwste stad in Nederland met 215.000 inwoners, en ligt vlakbij Amsterdam, omringt door water en met veel groen in de stad. In Almere wordt het gft afval al sinds het begin apart ingezameld en gecomposteerd, waarbij inwoners de compost mogen ophalen voor hun eigen tuin. Een paar jaar geleden zijn we gestart met andere biomassa reststromen uit de stad zo circulair mogelijk te verwerken. De eerste reststroom waren waterplanten, deze planten zijn een soort onkruid en werden elk jaar gemaaid en vervolgens weggegooid. Dankzij een publiek private samenwerking met meerdere bedrijven hebben we mooie toepassingen voor de waterplanten gevonden; zo wordt er nu papier en composiet van gemaakt, en wordt het verwerkt in beton. De nieuwste innovatie is verkeersborden van de reuzenbereklauw. We hebben nog moeite om de pilots die we doen ook op te schalen, vaak blijft het bij een klein project, maar juist die schaalvergroting zijn we naar op zoek om de business case echt rond te krijgen.

Ambition in HOOP

A retendering of the contract for processing biowaste offers opportunities to see if there is a more circular way of processing this waste. In addition, Almere are constantly looking for and testing new innovations in the field of biomass processing. HOOP has technical partners who have developed very innovative technologies. Almere aims to learn more about these technologies, so that they can also be applied in the city. Furthermore, a hub for circular business activities in two industrial areas is currently being developed, as well as a torrefaction plant that processes wood biomass in a circular way. In a year’s time Almere will hold the World Expo Floriade 2022, a world horticultural exhibition, that will also show innovations for processing pepper plant stems in buildings, etc. A good time to visit Almere!

Ambitie voor HOOP

Binnenkort moet het contract voor de verwerking van het gft afval opnieuw aanbesteed worden, en dat biedt kansen om te kijken of er een meer circulaire manier is om het gft te verwerken. Daarnaast zijn we continue bezig om nieuwe innovaties op het gebied van biomassa verwerking uit te zoeken en te testen. In HOOP zitten technische partners die zeer innovatieve technieken hebben ontwikkeld waar we graag meer over leren om deze ook in Almere toe te kunnen passen. Verder zijn we bezig met een hub voor circulaire bedrijvigheid op twee bedrijventerreinen in Almere, is er een torrefractiefabriek in de maak die houtachtige biomassa circulair verwerkt, en hebben we over een jaar de World Expo Floriade 2022, een wereldtuinbouwtentoonstelling waar ook innovaties worden getoond voor de verwerking van paprikastengels in gebouwen, etc. Een mooi moment om naar Almere te komen!
